Someone in Queensbury, N.Y. was tampering with a huge tank of diesel trying to cause an explosion near an apartment complex. Diesel tanks on farms can be quite large. This one was on a construction site:
"What was initially reported Friday as a fuel leak at a Meadowbrook Road construction company was actually an arson attempt, authorities said Saturday.
State Police believe someone deliberately opened a tank containing diesel fuel at Edward and Thomas O'Connor Inc. construction sometime late Thanksgiving night.
The suspect or suspects unsuccessfully tried to ignite the fuel, apparently not realizing that diesel fuel does not burn as easily as other types of liquid fuel, officials said.
"Diesel fuel has a higher flash point than gasoline," said State Police Senior Investigator Steve Ortiz.
"They must have missed that day of chemistry class," said Brian O'Connor, president of the company.
Ortiz said investigators did not want to release exactly what method was used to try to start the fire. A valve on the fuel tank was apparently tied open, and an employee of the company found the leaking tank about 5 a.m. Friday.
About 820 gallons drained from a 2,000-gallon tank into nearby Halfway Creek, a protected trout stream. The state Department of Environmental Conservation supervised a cleanup, and it was unclear what environmental problems might result from the spill.
Ortiz said State Police believe the person responsible was on the company's property sometime Thursday night.
"We've got some leads we're pursuing based on some employees who worked there in the past," Ortiz said.
It was particularly problematic because of the company's proximity to Regency Park Apartments should there have been an explosion or fire, he said.
O'Connor said he did not have any specific suspects in mind."
Fanatics obviously tried to cause a large explosion and fire near an apartment complex, but succeeded polluting a stream full of fish and other wildlife.
Why isn't Al Gore complaining about environmental terrorism?
The terrorist tactics of enemy combatants have released more carbon monxide and pollutants into the air with their arsons and explosions than global warming has and this subversive activity causes IMMEDIATE harm and death to human and animals.
